Modes are scales derived from a parent scale, usually the major or natural minor scale. Each mode starts on a different degree of the parent scale, resulting in a unique set of intervals and a distinctive sound. There are seven modes, each with its own name:

Dorian: Starting on the second degree of the major scale.
Phrygian: Starting on the third degree.
Lydian: Starting on the fourth degree.

The major 3rd complements the minor pentatonic scale of a dominant chord by introducing a major flavor. This combination creates tension and resolution, enhancing the overall musical expression. The major 3rd introduces a bluesy or jazzy feel, adding color and complexity to the dominant chord’s sound.
